{August 24th-30th}
Being... swept up in a current, heading in a direction I don't want to go. Life as a parent would be (a lot) easier if I could make choices on behalf of my children. But since I can't, I have to practice radical acceptance. Repeating, "It is what it is" gently under my breath as their consequences make themselves apparent is the only way I'm getting through this.
Reading... The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting which is a memoir by Evanna Lynch, the young actress who played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies. It's mostly about her struggle with anorexia. It's pretty good. It's been fun to read about what a Harry Potter fan she was even before she got the part.
Taking... Carly to her open house and helping comfort her when she realized none of her super close friends are in her class this year. I understand that's disappointing for her, but I think that her and her teacher are a perfect match, and as the mom, that's way more important to me than friendship. Plus, I assured her, you tend to make friends as the year goes on. So she'll likely pick up more friends as she settles into her new room.
Beaming... as Carly gave a BFF (Best Friends Forever) necklace to her friend Kamden as Kamden's mom and I looked on. I wasn't sure how he'd receive a necklace, but he absolutely loves it, and his mom texted me that he told her he has to take it off during his baths & showers so he doesn't ruin it. Carly went on to report that he wore it every day this week. Sigh. So sweet. (She and Kamden have known each other since they were 8 months old and we met each other at MOPS- Mothers of Pre-Schoolers).
Teasing... Josh that we need to have "the talk" with Carly's barbies who were showing a little PDA on the kitchen table. Haha. I remember loving romance just like Carly at her age.
Overjoyed... as I read Taylor Swift's engagement announcement. "Your english teacher and your gym teacher are getting married"-are you kidding me?! That's adorable!!! I am so happy for her to have her happy ending.
Getting... one last summer massage and chatting with my amazing masseuse the whole time. Sometimes I think my massages can be as healing as therapy. Highly recommend! (Just call your insurance company. That's what I did, and it turns out, they cover massage twice a month. I just pay my $15 copay!)
Listening... to The Cure For Chronic Pain my Nicole Sachs. Her podcast is so promising to me as a person who suffers greatly from fibromyalgia and subsequent pain & fatigue.
Accompanying... Wyatt to freshmen orientation at the high school. There are over 600 freshmen in his class, which is WILD to me. He had a good attitude, and we got our bearings of where things are. Something about sending your not-oldest child to high school-- it seriously feels like I am shipping my first grader to a sea of puberty-driven men & women. How is my sweet baby Wyatt this big already?! Thankfully he's very chill about the whole thing and he doesn't get ruffled easily. If he were struggling, I'd be a wreck.
Laughing... goodheartedly as Jack sat the kitchen table making fun of Josh being old, wearing his glasses, and looking at his phone with his arm as far away from his face as humanly possible. Josh was laughing, too. Suddenly it seems that Josh and I have gray hair at our temples, wrinkles outside our eyes and too many creaks & cracks in our bones to even list. The joke is on Jack though, because I remember making fun of my mom for the same thing (holding her phone far away to see it better) and then I turned 42 and suddenly I'm doing the same thing.
Sending... Wyatt and Carly off to their first day of school Wednesday. They both had good attitudes, and I would even say Carly was excited. (Her actual elementary school is closed due to electrical issues this year, so she gets to attend at one of our high schools, and she's so excited about the cafeteria among other things.)
Listening... to K-Pop Demon Hunters' soundtrack on the way to school each morning with Carly. I am simultaneously grateful and sad to no longer be the one to drive the boys to school. They can be moody (Hello Hormones!) but we would also laugh and talk... Hopefully they still do that, I just don't get to be present for it.
Watching... Couples Therapy on HBO. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. It's a reality show with the most amazing therapist (I love Orna!) and real life couples working through their issues. I walk away from every single episode with some kind of insight into why I do things the way I do, or ways to better our marriage. So good! (Thanks for getting me hooked, Roxanne!)
Waving... the twins off on Thursday as their start date was later in an effort to give the freshmen a chance to orient to campus. Jack slept in, but Logan attended Senior Sunrise with his girlfriend Elyssa. The pics were so cute and I think they had a good time. I am grateful that at this point they've made peace with the fact that I am going to ask for pictures all the time on the first day of school. Hah! Small wins.
Begging... the boys to clean up before they leave in the mornings. The way that towels and dirty clothes multiply in their bathroom and bedroom is not right. I don't know that even scientists could understand how two people make so much laundry & mess.
Relieved... to hear that Josh, who switched from teaching (after 15 years) to administration (assistant principal) had a fantastic first day in his new job. I knew he would be really good at the job, but I'm thrilled for him that he also really enjoys the job.
Requesting... copies of all three boys' 504's so I can look over the details and make sure they're still a good fit for their needs. Logan and Wyatt have ADHD 504's; Logan has a health plan; and Jack has a mental health 504. Making sure those are all in order will (*hopefully*) set us up for success this year.
Enjoying... having the house all to myself on Friday when they were all at school, all day. It was both bizarre and lovely. The mamas out there will understand.
Hitting... the grocery store with Carly & Wyatt on Saturday after getting rid of my migraine. I also ran a few other errands, and then came home and made everyone pizza for movie night. All in all, a good week with a pretty smooth start to the new year! {knocks on wood}
