Where I Read

I am often asked (usually by fellow busy mothers) how I get so much reading done with four kids, two cats, a dog, a house and a husband. In 2020, I read 105 books. It's looking like this year will be around 60. (Orchestrating distance learning with the boys last school year was a massive time and energy suck, and when I was done, I just wanted to veg, not use my brain more. Ha! So my numbers are down for 2021.)

"When do you find time to read?" they ask.

But the answer is that it's not about when I read (if I had to answer that I would say all.the.time) but more about where I read that matters.

I read in my bed, at the kitchen table, on my couch, on the front porch, in the car pick up line, at the doctors office, while I'm in the drive through pharmacy line, while waiting to pick up my kids from practice or a friends house, and at doctor appointments. I rarely leave home without a book, but on the occasion when I do forget it, I always have an audio book going.

I listen to my audio books in probably even more places than I read my physical ones.  I listen as I do dishes in the kitchen, fold laundry upstairs, make beds & tidy rooms, run errands around town, grocery shop, and walk the dog in our neighborhood... the list goes on.

I also take turns with Josh reading chapter books to the boys at bedtime. He's working through the Harry Potter series with them, but I just pick and choose different books that strike my fancy and seem like the boys would like them. Some are duds (like The Winter Room by Gary Paulsen, which we just finished. Boring!) but some are surprisingly delightful (like Pax by Sara Klassen. Now I want a fox. Hah!) and it's a great way to get more books added to my monthly numbers while also instilling a love of reading in my kids.

One more tip I would give, that is slightly personal, is to put a book in each of your bathrooms. Choose books that you are working through, trying to finish.  I prefer poetry, but short stories or a heavy non-fiction could also work, as you tend to want to read those in little bits so as to absorb everything.  I just started that trick last month, and my reading went from 2 books in September to 9 in October.

So if you're trying to increase how much you're reading, don't focus on when to read. Think about where you could read. Is there ten minutes in your day where you're waiting for something and could read a quick 15 pages? Could you listen to an audio book while you workout or make dinner? Maybe you could set bedtime a little earlier to squeeze in a few more chapters.  And when you're hitting the road to go anywhere, make sure you have an audiobook downloaded so you can get the pages read to you. That's one of my favorites.

Where do you read?
I am always looking for ways to get more reading out of my days,
so I'd love to hear your ideas.

Around Here: Week 49 2020

{November 29-December 5th}

{pc: Carly May}

{2020 Christmas Card: front}

{2020 Christmas Card: back}
Wishing... for snow.  It snowed a little bit one morning, like a tease, and it made all of us wish for the real deal.
Using... my Stress Away roller to get rid of a migraine that was starting, and it worked! Hallelujah! I am up to my full dose of blood pressure medicine, which is supposed to help eliminate migraines (and as an added bonus, it might reduce anxiety as well!) and I can't wait to see how many I have during the next month.

Breaking... the wish bone a few days after Thanksgiving.  It was Wyatt vs. Carly and Carly won!

Hosting... Alvin for a game of Monopoly with the twins. Some days they walk, some days they shoot hoops and some days they play games.  Checkers is a particular favorite.  It's a nice way to break up the day.

Heading... back to (online) school for the kids after our long Thanksgiving weekend. The break was much needed and enjoyed, and now it's back to real life. Just a few weeks, though, until Christmas break.

Enjoying... pizza at my parent's house during the Seahawk's game Monday night.  I was desperately needing to get out of the house (something I don't usually experience when I'm home for days on end) and this was just the ticket.  We enjoyed an evening with my parents, celebrating the boys' amazing report cards (all A's & B's for all three of them!) and watching the game.

Playing... guitar with my dad for the first time. I have no talent... but I'm trying and it made me excited to learn! My first goal is to learn how to play the chords to Bill Gorgan's goat.

Grateful... that my mom bought the kids Advent calendars this year. It has made every day of December so exciting for them.  The Advent calendars along with our Elf on the Shelf Dashy has made the start of our countdown to Christmas very festive. (They all got different Advent calendars- Jack chose a Funko Pop Harry Potter advent; Logan chose the Lego City advent; Wyatt chose the Hot Wheels advent and Carly chose the Littlest Pet Shop advent.)

Listening... to Ordinary Grace on audio and loving it. It's such a beautiful tale, and reminded me a lot of Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

Getting... school lunches everyday with the kids and stocking up on little milk boxes.  It is saving us so much money, I'm sure, and it ensures we get out of the house (even if it's just for a minute) everyday.

Taking... Logan to the doctor to get a fresh cast (the other one was funky!!) and having Carly get her flu shot at the same time. She was so funny, very nervous, but when it was over she said, "Owww! That didn't hurt at all!" Hahah!
Logan has just two more weeks with his cast. His break is 80-90% healed, but I don't trust that he would (could) be careful, so we're keeping it on a little longer for complete healing.

Sending... Christmas cards, which is probably my favorite Christmas tradition. I write a yearly Christmas letter, which feels so good- to look over the year and remember the ups and downs- and we usually have my sister take family pictures (thank you Roxanne!) which I then turn into a Christmas card on Shutterfly during one of their 50% off sales around Halloween. I really love when I choose a card that has a matching return address label. So cute!! #nerd

Thankful... that school is going really well right now with the kids. It is not my favorite, and this obviously isn't how school was meant to be... but we are doing well.  We are in a good routine and the twins' teacher is working really hard teaching them math at a distance, and Wyatt's classwork has simmered down some, so I am overall really pleased.

Seeing... Logan's neurologist via Zoom and telling her that he is two years seizure free. What an amazing thing to say out loud. The next step is to have a sleep deprived EEG for him and see if he is seizure free during that. If he is, then we can try weaning him off his medication and see how he does. Fingers crossed that it all goes well, and that this means he has outgrown his seizures.

Organizing... the pantry & the garage which is so helpful when we are all home (and usually in the house) during winter time.  The space suddenly feels so much smaller now that we aren't spending all our time outdoors.

Obsessing... over Harry Potter alongside the kids. I still haven't read the books, but Josh is on the third one with the boys and they are loving it. It's so cute to hear them talk about it and to have them look forward to bedtime reading the way I do.
They have been watching each movie as they finish the book, and that's made it really exciting as well.

Ordering.... things for pie making (a pastry cutter and a crust cover) to make it easier. I enjoyed making pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, but realized that some tools might make it easier, and make me more likely to bake when it's not a holiday.
Those items along with all our Christmas gifts started rolling in, and the empty boxes stacking up in the kitchen are quite ridiculous.

Cracking... a twin egg while making breakfast one morning this week and calling all the kids to show them. It always blows me away that my body did that same thing.

Watching... Carly dance to the music and pretend to snap her fingers. It's currently my favorite thing, and I really need to video tape it. You can tell she really feels the music in her soul. She closes her eyes and furrows her brow, and it's just the best.

Coloring... while the kids do school in my new beautiful color book by Katie Daisy. It is so happy.

Wrapping... up a good reading month. I read 8 books, hitting 99/100 on my yearly goal (wahoo!) and getting rid of 7 books off my Unread shelf, bringing my Unread Shelf down to 121.  I am toying with not buying books in 2021, in an effort to reduce my Unread Shelf... but the idea makes me kind of sad... so I'm not sure I'll do it.

Reminiscing... this time three years ago when Wyatt was hospitalized in the PICU in Spokane for status asthmaticus (asthma that is not responding to treatment). It was a very scary time, and I am forever amazed at how his body eventually recovered.  And now, with us being home full time, he doesn't seem to have any asthma symptoms at all.  It feels like a miracle.

around here: week 17 2020

Family FaceTime to wish my nephew Isaiah Happy Birthday!

Enjoying... how Carly feeds her stuffed animals (which we call "bubba's" at our house) with her pretend food.  She even puts her real bibs on them and uses her little plastic silverware. It's adorable.
Also enjoying a little break from the twins on Saturday while Josh took them to the land to ride four wheelers.  Carly got to spend the day playing with Wyatt, which overjoyed her little soul, and I got to spend the day journaling and reading, which made me so happy!

Watching... Holiday in the Wild on Netflix and enjoying all the elephants in the movie.  It was a cute little romantic comedy.  I've also been watching Anne with an E again from the beginning and I love it just as much as the first and second time.

Kayaking... with the family on Sunday and enjoying some music on the lake while soaking up the sun.  It was so lovely to get out of the house, and it's such a great workout!

Reading... Anne of Avonlea, Untamed and Iron & Silk, and listening to The Making of UsUntamed is incredible.  I am underlining something on nearly every page.  Anne of Avonlea is like a big hug. It's such a cozy read, I am loving it.  And Iron & Silk is interesting (about an American teacher in China), but mostly, it's a book I have had for somewhere for at least six years now, and I am so relieved that I am finally reading it.  It's been riding on my conscious for a long time now!

Receiving... the last book I ordered for my Anne of Green Gables collection.  I have 1-6 in a super cute collection (that even came with a journal!) and then I ordered Rainbow Valley & Rilla of Ingleside from Powell's, so The Blythe's are Quoted is the final piece!

Encouraging... the boys to do more reading as well by setting goals for their reading time.  They read for a half hour everyday after lunch, and now I tell each brother how many pages I expect them to finish in that time. If they meet that goal every day (Monday through Friday), they earn movie night. If they don't, or they are caught not reading during that time, they will lose family movie night Saturday.  It's been incredibly successful and I think it's actually helping them really love reading, because they are reading enough of the books to really get into them. It's exciting to witness.

Telling... Carly the same three rules every night at bedtime:
1) Stay in your bed
2) Be quiet
3) Go to sleep
I love how she looks when she does her little "shhhh" with her finger on her lips for #2.  She's just so darn cute.

Asking... Josh to cut my hair.  I've needed a haircut since before quarantine, honestly, and I had finally had enough of my split ends.  He was very brave and just went for it.  Then after he did the original cut, I trimmed a bit here and there, and overall, I'm very pleased with how it turned out!  It looks so much more healthy!

Loving... Carly's drawing of a cat and how much she loves her new set of dress-up stickers from Melissa & Doug.  I ordered them, hoping they would be a hit, but having no idea how much she would play with them. They're reusable and are full of unending fun.
Also loving how much Carly loves the Birkenstock flip flops my mom bought her to match me.  Before she went to bed, she lined her little ones up next to mine, and when I saw them all in a row like that, my heart did little somersaults in my chest.

Pulling... out a tree in the front yard and replacing it with a lilac, my favorite.  Josh and I both disliked the tree that was originally alongside the front porch, so when I asked him to pull it out and put a lilac in it's place he agreed, but was not looking forward to digging it out.  So instead he bought some tow rope and used his Suburban to rip it out. Then we passed the little tree along to his mom in hopes it can have a second life out on his parent's land.

Celebrating... my nephew from faraway by waking him up with a beautiful rendition of Happy Birthday, sung by his dad, my parents, my sister & her crew, and Josh and myself and our crew.  It made my heart feel full to all come together and send him love on his big 21st birthday.

Finding... hearts everywhere it felt like. I found a heart shaped rock in the driveway, and a heart shaped chip in Carly's BBQ Lay's bag.  They always make me smile and make me think of Everett and Toby, whose mom's I follow on Instagram. They're heart warriors whose stories are both remarkable in their own ways and have reminded me not to take for granted my healthy kiddos.

Laughing... at how Grady sits on the couch looking out the window.  Especially if the kids are out there.  It's quite pitiful.

Grateful... for the twins' tech teacher who checks in with them every week and knows our whole family.  Even Carly jumped in Jack's lap to check in with Mrs. Kowalski and talk about our dog with her. Any time we have a technology issue or question, she is our go-to teacher, and she somehow never seems put out or annoyed by our need for help.  Love her!!

Regretting... that Carly left her glasses outside on the patio.  Grady found them (he LOVES glasses for some reason!) and DESTROYED them.  Carly cried and cried when I found them in the grass, lenses popped out, completely chewed up.
Thankfully each of our kids has a back up pair, so she'll be fine, even though our vision clinic is closed.

Appreciating... the messages that the boys leave for Josh and I in our shower with Carly's foam letters.  There is only one of each letter, so they have to get really creative with their spelling. Love those guys.

This made me laugh.

This made me take a deep breath.
Keep carrying on, friends.
