Around Here: Week 45 2024

 {November 3-9th}

Logan sent me this shot from Grandma's house
Awwww- little Carly!

My favorite detail is Jack's keys hanging from his belt loop

Setting... all the clocks back and feeling very sad about the darkness.  At least it doesn't jack with all my kids' sleep anymore!

Making... chicken & dumplings from scratch and feeling grateful for cozy fall meals that make me hate the loss of summer & light a little bit less.  It helps that the kids love them, too!

Beyond... grateful that Jack managed to attend school all week this week, which was a vast departure from last week!

Disappointed... in the outcome of the election. Then, in an effort to feel okay about it, I asked myself "Why don't I love Trump?" which was the wrong question, because then I remembered all the ways he has shown hate to the marginalized groups in our country and how we deserve better. Sigh.

Taking... Jack to counseling with Heather who we love. She is so helpful and gets at the root of the problem and talks in a way Jack understands and responds to. I'm so grateful.

Opening... a box from Amazon I didn't order and finding a wood burning kit that Jack's Aunt Erica ordered for him so he could have a hobby.  It's really cool. Unfortunately the first time he used it, he burnt his finger really badly. Like, so bad (and painful) he couldn't have it out of the ice water for any length of time. I called the advice nurse and sent Josh to Walmart for burn cream and bandages. It continued to hurt for hours and he didn't fall asleep for hours (which you know impacts his mental health). Thankfully by the time he woke up the next day it was better. Phew!

Subbing... for Carly's teacher on Wednesday and matching with  my girl which makes my heart squeal because I know she won't want to match me forever, and so I will enjoy and cherish it while it lasts. We wore our school spirit shirts and giant heart earrings.
Subbing again Friday in first grade and getting to see so many of the kindergartners I had in my student teaching class. Those kids fill my heart in a way I can't even describe. I loved being in there!

Sending... all my love to St. Louis as one of my closest friends had her breast cancer mastectomy surgery this week. I hate so much that she's having to go through this, but she has been the most incredible example. Her attitude is better than anyone I've ever met and I know that's why she's doing so well. Her positivity is so inspiring. I sent her a candle that said, "Smells like new boobs up in here. {Just kidding, it's lavender and vanilla}" Haha! And a card with boobs drawn on it that said, "Out with the old, in with the new" just to make her smile. I love you Kari!!!

Shipping... my book back to Amazon after they sent it in a box along with lower control arms for Logan's Honda CRV and it got folded in half and smashed! I was so annoyed! Thankfully they sent a replacement very quickly!

Helping... Wyatt with his math and seeing the lightbulb go off as we finished about the third problem. That is why Josh got into teaching, and I get it. It's so exciting to watch kids connect what they're learning with what they're doing. There's nothing like it!

Eating... pizza upstairs with Carly on movie night and having a "girls night" with her and her dolls. I just wonder if I'll ever get over having a daughter. I think perhaps not.  I was mostly grateful that Jack and his girlfriend made the pizza so I didn't have to! Thanks you two!

Loving... how Carly always wants a stuffed animal or doll to join us at the kitchen table for dinner. She'll pull over a bar stool, stack up some books or games for them to sit on, and then get them little dishes from her playdoh set to eat with. Her imagination and the way she makes little moments special just brings me a lot of joy on the daily.

Finding... "graffiti" on the garage door that I assume is from Carly. It's in pencil and it's just a little smiley face next to a heart. This girl!

Uncovering... a surprise from Carly in my bedroom on my desk. She had a note on top that said, "Here mom" and underneath was a little container full of clear gummy bears she had saved for me from her Halloween candy.  She knows the clear ones are my favorite, so she didn't eat them. She shared them with her mama. I just adore her.

Laughing... at how adorable the drawings Carly made of Jack and Cadence are. In one they are hugging, and in another they are holding hands. Cadence is wonderful to Carly and I'm so grateful since the poor girl doesn't have a sister. I love how in the "hug" picture they have smiling eyes. So cute!
