Around Here: Week 19

Shuffling... through the week, a bit tired (Carly's teething four molars at once & she's been CRAAAANKY!) but thankful for another routine week after all the sickness.  The twins are testing, so we've been strict about bedtime and making sure they get loads of play time in the morning before school so they are happy.  I think the stress is getting to them, and I'll be glad for them to get a break this weekend.

Working... on a bird puzzle that is making me very happy.  It's a long rectangle, so my normal puzzle table is too small & squarish for it. Instead I have commandeered the kitchen table.  Sorry kids!

Luckily we're eating... on-the-go because every night this week we have had either practice or a game for the twins or Wyatt's baseball teams.  For the most part, dinner is the only stressful thing.  Getting everyone fed and out the door on time is challenging.  But yesterday Wyatt had a game in the wind and rain, and let me tell you, it was not fun!  Thank goodness Josh was there to keep Carly happy!

Loving... how helpful the twins are at this age.  Every weekend they help me grocery shop, bag the groceries, load them in the van, unload them when we get home, and finally unpack them at the house.  They also alternate cleaning bathrooms & vacuuming the house every Sunday, which lightens my load tremendously, plus gives them a boost of confidence and some ownership in keeping the house clean.
I am also loving how into rocks Wyatt is right now.  We checked out some earth books, and he checked out a rock book from his school library, so he is very interested in what kind of rocks we have around the house and how they were formed.  I always say if I hadn't been a mother, in another life I would have been a geologist, and his inquisitive mind makes it so much fun to read and learn and explore rocks again.

Laughing... at how our cat Ramona sleeps with her face down in the blankets. It cracks me up!

Trying... to catch the bunny in our yard.  The twins (as well as Wyatt) have come up with some pretty elaborate traps & plans to try and catch the sweet, wild bunny that lives under our shed in the backyard, and hangs out in the shrubs out front... but so far nothing has worked.  That little bunny is smart and quick, so I think catching him is just a pipe dream!

Preparing... for Mother's Day with some handmade cards & pictures for the moms and grandma's in our lives.  As for our family, we don't have any plans, which is fine with me.  Hopefully it'll be a sunny day spent outside working in the yard!
As we spent a day this week making cards for Grandma's, I thought of my friend Brittany's Etsy shop & the cute cards she has there.  If I had been on top of my game, I would have ordered some cards ahead of time to send all the moms we love!

Reading... The Inheritance after finishing The Memory of Water.  I also finished I Survived: The Eruption of Mt. St. Helens.  Up next is Into The Water by Paula Hawkins (who wrote The Girl on the Train).  The twins and I started The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl and they did not want me to stop at bedtime yesterday. I think it will be a quick read, then we are moving on to Tales of  a Fourth Grade Nothing.  I also have The Stars are Fire (thank you Linda!) on my shelf to read, but I think I'm going to wait for a little warmer weather so I can sit outside in the sunshine and read it.  I love having that to look forward to.
I am also reading through the giant stack of children's library books we got at the library last week.  Wyatt loves when I read to him and I'm trying to do it more than just every night at bedtime.  We read a couple books when he got special time with me last weekend while Josh was out of town.  We found two new Tacky The Penguin books we have never read before (Tacky Goes To Camp & Tacky and The Haunted Igloo) that have been a huge hit this week. We also read a book about a sloth trying to escape the zoo and he uses all kinds of simple machines to try and get out.  This prompted days of Wyatt carrying around a Jenga piece and a ruler so he could make a lever and launch whatever he wanted into the sky.  Heads up! if you're in the Cunningham household!

Listening... to Anne of Green Gables and And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman.  Up next is Anne of Avonlea, followed by The Here and Now.  I absolutely love listening to audiobooks on Overdrive.  I listen while I do dishes, fold laundry and walk to and from getting the boys at school.  It brings me such joy!

Watching... Gilmore Girls (starting with Season 1) on Netflix during the day as I go about my chores; and Rogue One (finally!) with the twins while Josh was out of town last weekend.  We all loved it and the boys enjoyed their special time with me while Wyatt & Carly slept.  We also saw Monster Trucks last weekend, which was super cute & unexpected.

Around Here: Week 15

Wrapping up... Spring Break.  We spent the last half at home, with Josh's family in town.  It was fun for the kids to see their aunt, uncle & cousins and spend special time with Grandma & Papa.  For me, it was nice to have a few days at home to get caught up on laundry before things went back to normal.

Getting... back into our routine with school and the addition of baseball practice for the twins.  They're so excited, and I can't tell you how awesome it is having Josh here for it this year!!!

Enjoying... the play structure in the back yard and the arrival of spring weather.  We've been walking/biking to school and it makes me (and the boys) so happy!  In the afternoons, Wyatt can hardly wait to get back home so he can play on the play set Josh's sister gifted us.  What a blessing.

Teaching... the boys how to clean house.  We spent a few hours Sunday afternoon vacuuming, sweeping and cleaning the bathrooms, and it's amazing how much we can get done when we work as a team.  I love starting the week with a clean house and they are really prideful about their work. (Logan reminded Jack as he went to brush his teeth, "Don't leave the toothpaste in the sink, Jack. I worked hard to get that clean." My work here is done. Haha!)

Frustrated... with Carly's lack of sleep and constant crankiness.  I did finally figure out she's teething a molar, but even with that knowledge, I am having to work really hard at my patience!  Girl, you can either a) stay up all night or b) be cranky all day... but NOT both!

Celebrating... good grades (Straight A's for Jack and all A's + 2 B's for Logan! And Wyatt's was all on point as well!) and celebrating an award ceremony (way to go, Logan!) for being a Mighty Mathematician (He and Jack have memorized their multiplication facts through the 12's).  Also celebrating (and thanking the good Lord) that Logan has had no side effects from his medication for over two weeks. I am so thankful for this one.

Struggling... as Jack was invited to a birthday party and Logan wasn't.  I knew this day was coming, and I'm okay with Jack having his own friends... but it is so hard for my heart to see Logan hurting, feeling left out.  Josh told him this is just the beginning.  I told him it'll be better to accept that life's not fair than to constantly fight that one. He agreed that if he got the invite, he'd want to be able to go on his own... so it's just an adjustment.

Feeling... sad for Jack as he got the news that his injury-caused early pickup from school one day (he bonked a pole and was showing concussive symptoms) got him bumped from Perfect Attendance which he had maintained all year.  He was so pumped to win that bike.  Poor kid.

Reading... this blog post about Good Friday and being without your church.  It was sad and good and sad... as those things are. I loved what Glennon said about it: "Religion is not God," and "No man can keep God from you.  God is yours and you are God's.  Nothing can separate you from God's love."  These are truths I cling to.

Around Here: Week 45

Our Ramona Girl

Our House

Reading... Flight Behavior and getting ready for our new book club discussion that starts Monday.

Organizing... the boys' room, Carly & Wyatt's room, and the closet in the bathroom.  It feels great! It's like I'm spring cleaning in reverse.  In preparation for winter setting in, we cleaned up the yard and tidied the garage as well last weekend.  It is fantastic. Now this weekend I just need to clean these organized rooms and we will be all set.

Preparing... for Logan's EEG that is out of town this afternoon.  Josh and I will be lugging all four kids with us because one of us has to drive, and the other has to help keep Logan awake on that long drive.  Poor kid was only allowed to sleep from midnight to 4am, which means in addition to a tired kid, we've got some tired parents as well.  Prayers for a quick trip (minus Carly crying) and good results on the EEG are welcome!

Counting... Carly's teeth-- we are up to six already!  Holy teething, Batman!  She went from none to six in a little over two months.

Hanging up... Wyatt's first hand-written pictures for Josh and me. "For dad" and "For mom" written in adorable kindergarten writing under a picture drawn of us, in stick figure, holding hands with Wyatt.  So sweet.  We are also enjoying his creativity.  When I received a puzzle in the mail, Wyatt begged me to keep the shipping box so he could do a project. Yesterday afternoon (100% independently) he turned it into this armor/robot thing he can put on. It's hilarious and adorable.

Encouraging... Carly to crawl.  Her hands know what to do, and she's in the right position, but we haven't yet got her legs doing what they should.

Breathing... deeply everyday on my walk to and from school with the boys. The weather has been lovely, the skies blue and sunny, and the trees have still been putting on a fabulous show for me.  I am feeling so blessed by this time of year, by our neighborhood, by my stay-at-home mom status and by this routine we have of walking to school together each morning.

Craving... more down time with my family.  I am taking time every morning to snuggle with Wyatt on the couch and read him a book, and I started reading My Side of the Mountain aloud with the twins.  That time with those sweet boys of mine who attend school all day is priceless.

Feeling... Exhausted. Just utterly exhausted. Teething, the time change and worry for Logan and life in general has me feeling so tired all.the.time.  Maybe next week I'll get some sleep!  In the mean time, coffee and Dr. Pepper alternated are keeping me going.

Happy... with accomplishing more this week thanks to my weekly goals.  I did more blogging than normal (even if it wasn't every day like I'd hoped), helped Josh label his donated classroom books, opened the kids' individual bank accounts and still have the weekend to finish organizing all my journals and write my pen pals.

This Week's Goals:

  • Write yearly Christmas card letter
  • Address Christmas cards
  • Bake "Thank you" cookies for the boys' school

Carly // Nine Months

Baby Shelly at 11 months
(with my brother, dressed as He Man)

Baby Shelly
Playing Peek A Boo with my mom
Wyatt at 9 months
Jack & Logan, 9 months
Jack, 9 months
Logan, 9 months

While home for a visit I got to look through my mom's photo albums of my infancy.  It was so fun to look and compare.  While looking I snapped pictures of a few that really reminded me of Carly.  Then once I got home, I looked at pictures of the twins and Wyatt at 9 months for more comparisons.  In my opinion, she still looks like the twins' triplet.  In some pictures, it was hard to tell which twin was which because honestly they both just looked like Carly to me! (Especially in sleeping pictures!)

She is currently rolling all around, can go from sitting up to laying down and back again.  She is awake usually twice a night with a 6:00pm bedtime and a 10pm and 3am wake up to nurse.  Her two naps are at 9am and 1pm and I can't wait for her to transition to only one nap because currently taking the boys to school and picking them up from school interrupts her sleep.

Her top teeth are coming in-- she's got both top front teeth, one front side tooth, and two bottom teeth.  She loves to eat food from my plate and has baby food mastered.  She loves cheerios and picks up garbage off the carpet to eat as well.  It's hard!

Other than eating stuff off the carpet and a few cranky days teething here & there, Carly is really a delight. She adores her brothers and lights up when she sees them.  She loves our cats, and will squeal when they pass her and cry when we scold them.  Josh and I both can't wait for her to start talking. In the mean time I think I'm going to get started teaching her some basic signs.  We taught the twins at this age and they really took to it!
