Watching... The Frozen Ground with Josh for date night. It's a great police mystery movie about a series of missing persons cases in Alaska, played by Nicolas Cage.  Naturally, we love anything about Alaska, and we adore Nicolas Cage (we nearly named Wyatt "Atley" after the guy who plays his friend in Gone in 60 Seconds), so it was an easy choice and it turned out to be a good movie.

Celebrating... as my grandma's friend became a Great Grandmother this week.  Her husband Chuck passed a few years ago, and her brand new grandson, Charlie, is a beautiful tribute to him. I am so, so happy for their whole family.  The joy on Dorothy's face is just priceless.

Feeling... super sick with some kind of sinus thing.  I had a cold before Christmas that naturally went on hold (it's like a mom Super Power) when my kids all came down with Influenza B before Christmas break, and it has since come back with a vengeance.  I am taking sudafed, ibuprofen, afrin and tessalon perles, plus I'm using the neti-pot twice a day.  I am determined to kick this thing, dang it.

Visiting... my girl Shana sans children and loving the chance to talk for hours without interruption.  She made me the most delicious (and necessary) cup of coffee while Josh kept our kids home so I could have that time to myself.  Being married to a teacher is just the best sometimes!

Undecorating... for Christmas sooner than years past.  We had nothing going on Saturday after Christmas so we just went for it.  Between Carly and the dog, the tree was basically undecorated as it was (ha!) and we were all ready for the house to feel a little bigger.  It only took us about two hours, which was amazing, and I am so grateful we just did it.

Wishing... the Seahawks had won the game Josh was invited to join attending.  He went with my generous brother in law and his crazy generous parents.  When we told them that Josh couldn't go, because we couldn't afford the ticket, the three of them came together to cover the cost of Josh's ticket.  I was moved to tears and just can't get over how good people are to us and our family.  In ways that are just above and beyond.  They were a literal answer to prayer, as I had prayed for God to create a way for Josh to go, to make clear to me how to do it. And instead He covered the details and just made it happen.  Thanks for being His hands, Bruce, Jennifer & Blake.

Having... my sister and her three kiddos over for a few hours while our husbands were at the football game Sunday.  We fed the monsters; sorted Legos and visited.  Plus, being the amazing saint she is, she did my dishes. Dish after dish, pan after pan, she just kept washing and washing. I was so insanely grateful.  Thanks, Roxanne. You're the BEST.

Finally... feeling like a have a bond and connection with Romy, my niece.  It's been in little bits and pieces, slowly coming together, and finally this visit she kept calling me mommy (I think because of Carly calling me that) and wanting me to follow her and carry her everywhere. She just melts my heart.  Her hugs are the best thing on.the.planet and her smile lights her ENTIRE face.  She has the most adorable black curls and she tilts her head to one side when she's trying to understand why someone is upset. "What happ?" she asks over and over.  I am just crazy in love with her and I'm so excited that I'm one of her chosen people now!

Listening... to Jewel's book Never Broken on audio thanks to the recommendation of my mom's good friend and our old neighbor Susan.  This book was never on my radar, I didn't even know she had written one, when Susan suggested it.  I am so, so grateful she did.  The entire book (which Jewel narrates) is engrossing and full of life lessons in how to find beauty in the ashes.
She believes that souls, like water, cannot break. (How gorgeous is that idea?!?) She says that we are flexible and that if we choose to be flexible that can be what keeps us from feeling broken.  She also says that we should thank the girls we were for being brave enough and strong enough to get us to today, and that our innocence is not lost when we are hurt.  It is instead transformed, into wisdom.  I just love the visual of that.  Instead of imagining my innocence blowing in the wind like whisps of smoke, gone forever, I love seeing it transforming like one type of rock into another. From what it was to what it will forever be.
The book completely stands alone, but especially if you have ever watched Alaska: The Last Frontier, I think you would enjoy it, as it sets the background for Atz Sr.'s life before the show and his children's early lives.  It's amazing all they have been through and forgiven each other for.  I am beyond impressed.

Enjoying... a little-kid-free day when Josh's mom agreed to have Wyatt & Carly on the 31st.  Then in the afternoon, Logan & Jack's friends invited them over for a few hours as well, so we had only two kids at a time all day.  It was lovely.

Celebrating... the new year in bed like every reasonable 36 & 37 year old couple with four kids who will be up at 6:30am the next morning. Ha!
.....zzzz......

Slowly... working our way back into real life, making Jack do make up homework (from when he was sick) and cleaning house the weekend before we headed back to work and school.  I also did a load of organizing while listening to The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up on audio, and he worked his butt off on his art project.  Logan, the lucky guy, got to go ice skating with his friend Joseph.  It was great to have the house back in order and to have Jack somewhat caught up before he headed back.

Trading... my nephew for Ferris for Wyatt over break after meeting my sister halfway between our two towns.  Ferris & Jack played at my house while Wyatt & Milo played at her house and in the afternoon we met up again to swap back.  Logan spent the day at the land with Josh and Samuel, which was special to him and exactly the break he and Jack needed from each other.

Grateful... that Josh's mom came to pick up Logan & Jack on the 1st for their special time with her so we could have a lazy morning in our jammies.  I spent the day making goals and deciding on my "phrase of the year", as well as compiling my favorite reads of 2019, and creating my To-Read lists for 2020 {coming soon!}.  I used templates from Modern Mrs. Darcy and Whitney over at The Unread Shelf to decide what books I want to make a priority this year.
{If you have any questions about my favorite reads of 2019, ask away! I love talking books!}

See The Good + 2020 Goals

For the last few years I have chosen a "word of the year"
and this year I wanted to do the same.
When I sat down to think about what I wanted to focus on in my life,
especially in parenthood & for overall my mental health,
"See The Good" came to me.

So my main goal this year is to see the good in everything around me.
When things go wrong, or the kids get sick, I want to find the silver lining.
To bring this goal into fruition daily, I grabbed a tiny lined notebook I had lying around and every night I try to write down as many good things as I can that I noticed that day.  It's been super simple, and very impactful because as I go through my day I find myself searching for what things I will be writing down that evening in my little "See The Good" journal.

In addition to "See The Good", I have some other goals as well:

  • Journal more often
    • I'm thinking once a week as my specific goal, kind of as a way to replace counseling which I stopped over summer.
  • Save $100/month for Christmas
    • This is a "dream big" goal!
    • If I do this, I know it will help us keep Christmas "cash only", which we managed this year, but was way more tight than we wanted it to be.
    • I hope to achieve this by selling random items I come across as I organize the house in the new year.
  • Walk
    • I know I need to workout to help reduce my stress level and improve my sleep.
    • Walking happens to be my preferred method of exercise.
    • So far, I have not made this happen (thanks to being sick myself & having sick kids) but hopefully I can start in February.
  • Read 100 books
    • Last year I made it to 89 and was this.close!
    • This year I am planning to read at least 8 books a month, more some months.
    • I hope to be reading at least 3 books at a time: one non-fiction, one fiction & one audio.
    • I'll be posting more about my related "Unread Shelf Project" goals soon!
  • "Center Down"
    • This is a phrase Anne Morrow Lindbergh, mother of six, used in this quote that struck me some months ago: “Woman's life today is tending more and more toward the state William James describes so well in the German word, 'Zerrissenheit: torn-to-pieces-hood.' She cannot live perpetually in 'Zerrissenheit.' She will be shattered into a thousand pieces. On the contrary, she must consciously encourage those pursuits which oppose the centrifugal forces of today…. Solitude, says the moon shell. Center-down, say the Quaker saints." This idea of surviving the insanity of all the chaos around me by "centering down", finding peace within, and being the "eye of the storm" has been very useful as my home has grown more busy with each passing year.
    • I like this quote from Michael Singer's Untethered Soul as well: "The truth is, everything will be okay as soon as you are okay with everything."
    • I am going to try and make sure that throughout each day I am taking time to breathe and center myself because I know that much of our family's happiness revolves around my ability to keep my cool. (So much pressure!)

What are your goals for 2020? Do you have a word for the year?
I'd love to hear all about it!

Week 52 Around Here {2019}

Spending... time with my parents who came to stay with us after Romy's adoption.  It was the first time they met our new dog, Grady and I was so excited for them to see him.  We grew up with German shepherds.  First Buddy, then Kramer, so my dad is a huge fan of them.  And my mom loves all dogs.  So they were really happy to pet him and get to know him. They brought their dog Juno, who thankfully got along great with Grady, and they had so much fun playing together!  Carly adores Juno and spent nearly the entire time my parents were here in Juno's crate with Juno, singing her songs.

Seeing... Jumanji at the theater with my mom, Logan & Wyatt while my dad and Jack went to see the most recent Star Wars movie.  Logan vacillated about what to see until we got to the theater and saw a warning that the Star Wars movie had some light scenes that could trigger seizures in certain people and the decision was made for him.  (He has light sensitive epilepsy- during his EEG the light part triggered seizures in him) For that same reason we couldn't see the newest Incredibles in the theater.  As a mom, I'm just grateful they have those warnings out for kids like Logan.
And luckily he really liked Jumanji.

Ice skating... with my parents and my sister's crew during their visit.  We had so much fun! I was not sure if it would be a good time.  Especially when Carly said she wanted to come along.  (She's never been before!) But it ended up being great! She did awesome, as did my other three, and we all had a blast skating around together.

Grateful... for my sister & her husband's thoughtfulness when they came to meet Grady for the first time.  They brought antlers for him to use as chew toys and he LOVES them!! Merry Christmas, Grady!

Hosting... a dinner for my mom's birthday (the 23rd) for my parents and sister's family.  Josh did the cooking while we were ice skating with the kids.  The night before, my mom and I made pumpkin pie and pudding pie.  Carly was disappointed we didn't have an actual cake for dessert since it was mom's birthday. Ha!

Opening... books on Christmas Eve, per our family tradition, and making cinnamon rolls while the boys read them.  Then we watched Home Alone and had pizza (our other Christmas Eve tradition) with four of us in matching jammies. (thanks mom!)  I bought Josh a special edition of The Giver quartet by Lois Lowry, which includes all four books in the series so he can read the additional three to the boys.  (He read the first one, The Giver, to them last month.)

Celebrating... Christmas with early morning present opening (hello 6:30am) and cinnamon rolls.  Yum.  It was a great, cozy, slow moving morning.  I spent nearly all of it on the couch watching back episodes of Alaska The Last Frontier and napping as my cold from the week before was coming back with a vengeance.
Then we hosted Josh's parents, brother and his girlfriend.  Again, Josh did all the cooking that needed to be done on our end.  He's just the best. His parents brought a lot as well and we enjoyed quite the feast.

Soaking... up all the snuggles and slow mornings while the kids are off school. It's so nice to wake up and stay in our jammies for hours while hanging out together watching TV, reading and playing games.  I know I will be ready for our routine when the new year comes and school starts back up, but for now, I am enjoying every relaxed minute.

Feeling... so blessed to have had such a beautiful holiday with everyone, all sides of our family.  I'm so grateful that it worked out for my parents to come up for some of the holiday for Romy's adoption, and that Josh's parents are living here where we are now.  It's been so amazing having them here.  And Josh's brother, too.  We're just so, so lucky.
