Around Here: Week 51 2024

 {December 15th-21st}

Reading... The Snow Child for book club. This is the third time I have read it, and it never gets old. I love all the characters, the setting... I just live for Eowyn Ivey's books.

Dealing... with the power going out on Monday afternoon just as it was getting dark. I fumbled around a bit, gathering all our candles and lanterns (battery operated only) to allow us to still function. Carly took some of my fake candles (battery powered ones) up into her room, climbed in her blankets and read a book. Similarly, I layered on some blankets and used my book lamp to read a few chapters before the power came back on.

Taking... Logan & Wyatt to Dr. Diamond for IQ testing. They both said it made them feel dumb, which I hated, but I assured them that if they struggled, that just means that that test may very well be catching the areas where their ADHD is inhibiting their ability which is what we want.

Writing... out lists of the boys' ADHD symptoms as they appear in different settings (school, home, family, friends, extended family) for Dr. Diamond to have to refer to if needed.

Attending... counseling this week and talking about how I struggle to work out or get enough sleep despite knowing that would help reduce the impact of all this stress on me (especially as stress relates to my fibromyalgia which is terrible currently). She said at this point it's not about want. It's about need. I need to take care of myself. I need to make a bedtime plan for more sleep. And I need to think about working out like using the bathroom. You just gotta do it. We talked about my all or nothing, black and white thinking and how that defeats me before I even step on the treadmill. A walk around the block is great. A ten minute walk is great. If I can do more, sure, that's even better, but let's not let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

Subbing... in a first grade classroom for two days this week and feeling sad when a kiddo who struggles indeed found himself struggling. It's hard sometimes to be the sub with kiddos like that because there's not the relationship that would be needed to know how to best help and avoid meltdowns. Thankfully the staff is amazing and everyone was safe and able to come back together after a cool down.

Evacuating... the school for a gas leak during the last hour of the day, on the afternoon of the last day before Christmas break began. So many first graders were so scared and crying, even though everyone was safe, because seeing and hearing the firetrucks roll up was enough for them to get upset. Poor babes! I couldn't hug some of them enough.

Feeling... so happy that I could make Josh laugh. He is one of the funniest people I know, so when I make him laugh, I feel like a million bucks. It's my favorite.

Loving... the way Josh sat on the couch and held Carly during what we think was a migraine. That poor baby. Hers come on strong and fast and she fell asleep in his arms.

Cooking... golden mushroom soup patties and brownies after work on Thursday and feeling grateful that we all sit down together for dinner every night. Sure, it's a pain to cook all the time, but I know I'll never regret it.

Spoiled... by Cadence (Jack's girlfriend) who came by Thursday with gifts for me and Carly. This girl got me earrings, a necklace, a candle, a blanket, a sweater, cozy socks and a t-shirt. Oh! And the cutest teacher-y cup. She said she just loves shopping, but I was blown away. So, so thoughtful.

Sad... that there isn't any snow here. It just doesn't feel like Christmas with no snow!

Sending... the kids to the land to bake Christmas cookies with Grandma Carol. They made cornflake wreaths, peanut butter Ritz dipped in chocolate, sugar cookies and a few others.  So yummy! For me, it was a delicious break from all four children! Thank you Grandma! Haha!

Attending... my dad's choir concert, A Thrill of Hope, in Wenatchee and going out to dinner with my parents & sister afterward. Josh and I had a lovely time and it was fun to sit through a concert. Dinner was the best part, though, just talking and laughing together. So perfect. The drive home was the only bummer as it was foggy af. I mean, you couldn't see at all and that made driving 70mph on the freeway feel really terrifying. The fog makes me super claustrophobic anyway, and then you add driving that fast, and I was pretty freaked out. Thankfully we made it home safely to the kids, whom we left home alone together.
