the 4th of july : part one

Sunday morning we headed to St. Mary's for a breakfast, then the boys ran around outside, and I got some cute pictures.

As we were leaving St. Mary's it started to rain.

Luckily the clouds cleared for a while, and we got to enjoy the Rockaway Beach 4th of July parade.

There was a lot of candy being thrown, and the boys were a little scared.

My grandpa made this horse. And not to be TMI, but it poops Tootsie Rolls!

My grandparents walked in the parade to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
My grandma is in the purple hat, on the right.

Logan donated...

As did Jack.

We had some suckers thrown our way, which the boys enjoyed.

After the parade, we headed home, fed the boys lunch and they went down for naps. They only slept about an hour, and when they woke up, they were CRANKY!

the beach...

For the Fourth of July weekend we headed to the beach, to stay with my great grandparents who live along the Oregon Coast.

(my g-ma makes the coolest train whistle noise, and the boys have associated it with her, so they call her grandma whoo-whoo, which is adorable!)

suggestions

I am in desperate need of some suggestions...

About a number of issues...

And I know that in the past, I may not have been open to suggestions, but at this point, I am ready and willing to make any changes necessary so that I (and my husband and children) can get more sleep.

The boys are not sleeping through the night, and they are not sleeping in long enough in the mornings.  They are also still *super attached* to their binkies & bubbas.
I will tell you our situation, then you can consult your own wisdom, as well as friends, coworkers and random moms you see at the store with two-year-olds or twins, and report back to me.

Right now this is what our days look like:
5:30am- The boys are up for the day.
7:00am- Breakfast
Play, usually at home
10:00am- Snack
12:00pm- Lunch
After lunch we lay them down for sleep in their bedrooms, with their fan on, their sleepy time CD on, with their bubs, binkies & blankets.  They are sleeping in "big boy beds", so Josh and I take turns sitting on the floor in there until they fall asleep, which is about five or ten minutes. They generally sleep 1hr45m to 2hrs.
2:00pm- Wake up, change diapers, snack
Go for a walk and play at the park
5:30pm- Dinner, although lately we've been waiting until 6pm to feed them
6:30pm- Bath time
6:45pm- Pj's, Story Time, and lights out.
Again, the fan is on, the CD is on (just one time through, not on repeat), and we used to have the nightlight on but about two weeks ago I stopped turning it on, because when they woke up at night they would start playing.  The nightlight being off has stopped the playful behavior, but now they can't find their binkies in the dark.
7:30pm- Most night it takes the boys about 20 to 35 minutes to fall asleep, and we walk out of their room at this time.  Again, we just sit on the floor, not interacting (very Nanny 911ish) and wait for them to fall asleep.
1:00am- If the boys have not woken up at 11:00pm (which they occasionally do) this will be the first wake up. It's typically Logan, who just cries until I wake up. When I go in, he says he needs his binky and bubba, and is ready to get back to bed.
4:00am- This wake up is usually Jack, who stands at their child proof door and knocks. "Mommy, where are you?" he calls. When I get in there, he is generally really awake, and has sometimes woke Logan up, but generally not. I give him his bubba and binky and lay him down. He always seems tired once he's laying down, but if I try to leave and go back to bed, I hear the knocking yet again. This morning, we did this three times before I called for back up and sent Josh in so I could sleep.
5:30am- They're up for the day again.

I guess I am just wondering if this is normal two year old behavior... Is it just a phase? Do you think it's the two year molars?  Are they hungry? Are they scared? Will it get better when they break their binky habit and they no longer need to look around for their bink during the night?
I know I am wearing them out everyday. I am worn out everyday.  But could I be doing more?  Should they watch less TV?  Is this just their personalities? I never slept through the night. Ever. Is it payback?

Someone, anyone, help me!
Please!

so busy...

During the school year, a large portion of my life (mainly cleaning and organization) has to take a backseat to the craziness that raising twins and working full time creates.

I never get to take a break from the living room (cause the boys' care was here at the house two or three times a week, and I do have some standards!)

I also was unable to let the kitchen go, just because it is so small, and also used on a daily basis, so it always had to be maintained.  (Although, in the interest of honesty, I will tell you that I have not cleaned my fridge, stove or pantry in a very, very long time. And have you heard that mopping is so last year? At least that's what I'm telling myself.)

The boys' room, as well, was kept tidy and peaceful for my little bubs.

But my room... Well, my room is a different story.

I was telling my mom yesterday that I used to sit on my high horse (and oh my, was it a HIGH horse) and judge the women I baby-sat or nannied for.  I couldn't believe the state of their bathrooms (the mold, the mildew!), the state of their bedrooms (beds never made, laundry never put away), the state of their nurseries (dust- oh the dust!)...

Well, for the last nine months, I was a working mommy. And it is not as easy as it looks. If you slack off for one afternoon, or even one hour, the house can get out of control, like in The Cat and the Hat. Pretty soon that pink ring around the tub is so big, and you're so used to it, that you kind of start to tell yourself it matches the pink tiles and the purple decor.
And the dust in the boys room, well, they don't have allergies (yet) right? It'll wait. I will find time to wash those curtains, and take apart the fan to get rid of the dust build up... Eventually.  (And I did... right around their SECOND BIRTHDAY!)
The laundry, well,  I washed it! And I folded it, didn't I? Who's to say it has to be put away this week, and that we can't just continue picking our clothes out of it until it's laundry day again?
And as for the bed being made, I hardly spend enough time sleeping in it to be able to justifiy spending any time making it. Not to mention that if I leave the living room to do said chores, the boys will want to join me, and my bedroom, as you can see from these pictures, is like a field with land mines. Humongous, dangerous, scary accidents just waiting to happen.
So really, making my bed is a safety hazard.  Or, like I said, that's just what I told myself.

But now.  Ahhh, now.  Now it is summer. And I am home. All day. Everyday. And it is so luxurious. I have organized my bills, made my bed (everyday!), washed, folded, and put away (!!!) load after load of spring fresh laundry, cleaned out my bedroom, redone my clothes drawers, with the shirts separated by season and colors...
It is every Monica's fantasy.  All this organizing and cleaning, makes me feel in control of my life again. Like I have handle on everything. Each day I make a little more progress toward digging myself out of the hole the last nine months created. And it makes me so happy. I feel capable.
And the boys make it easier, too.  They are helping clean up their own toys. They can play and entertain each other while I do some things around the house, and they are getting more independent, which means less time doing every little thing for them.

But all of this work, this being so busy, has meant some neglect for the blog. So today I decided that I would go for it! I would blog all those pictures back-logged in my mind, blog all those ideas, and all that new news, and just get it out there, so that after the weekend, (hooray for the 4th of July) I could start fresh- all caught up.

One more post, and then I am off to re-organize my scrapbook desk.  It is in serious need of some TLC!

good news...

...We had been worried about finances, and that has since been resolved.

...We have been worried about Josh getting a job here locally, and we got a call yesterday for an interview for a position he would REALLY love to have... I'll be sure to keep you updated after the interview date.

...I have been feeling down in the dumps about myself, and decided to do something about it. So far, I have worked out in some form or another every day of summer break. I am so proud of myself! It's amazing how it helps me not only feel better physically, but more energized emotionally as well.

...And, on a much smaller (but still significant) scale, Josh's sister, Laura, found us the most awesome filing cabinet for only $15, and now I have all my paperwork & bills organized- I feel like a new woman!

"The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds..." -Phillipians 4:5-7

That's how it is that I come to you with a post filled purely with good news.  I pray... And I pray... And I pray.
Then, when I can't pray anymore, I just take a deep breath and trust God.

pedal

{Jack}
{Logan}

The boys LOVE their new trikes from my mom. They both ride; Logan mostly scoots his feet along the ground, but Jack can actually pedal.  I am so impressed!
They call them their "bikes" and always ask to ride them when we're at the park.  They're getting so big!

the birthday sink

This is the outdoor sink we got the boys for their birthday.  We thought it would be a hit, and we were right. They had an awesome time playing with it.  I'm sure we will get our moneys worth this summer!

I am feeling...

officially behind in my blogging!
Expect a bundle of
new posts...
