Around Here: Week 16 2025

 {April 13th-19th}

Carly's Roblox creation

Watching... the movie, A Real Pain, which is nice, if awkward and emotional. Kieran Culkin reminds me of my little brother Dallas, so it felt like spending the afternoon with him, which was nice.

Proud... that Carly delights in the cherry blossoms, just like her mother. I love that my boys will come tell me if there's a rainbow or a pretty sunset. I may not have done a lot of things right with my kids, but at least they know how to find and enjoy beauty in nature.

Doing... chores on Sunday, like always. It's just the best way to start the week.  Clean house, clean laundry, homework check in... it's just the best.

Coloring... on the table on a kraft colored tablecloth I made out of wrapping paper I got at Dollar Tree.  It ended being a really fun thing for everyone, who we had over for Rusty's (a Cunningham family tradition meal that Josh's mom used to make and now his sister makes).

Deciding... near midnight to take Jack to the ER for a headache/migraine that continually got worse after bedtime Sunday night. The poor kid was absolutely miserable. I knew he wasn't okay when he readily agreed to head to the ER. Logan helped Jack get dressed in some warm clothes (the hospital is always so cold) and continued to worry about his brother for days afterward.

Waiting... for a long time in the waiting room at the ER, watching a baby with trouble breathing, and a dad with a sick toddler, heading in to wait, and feeling grateful that Jack isn't little. At one point, Jack needed to lay down, so he used my giant purse as a pillow and rested his eyes. Other times, he lay his head on my shoulder and rested there. Something about my kids being sick always makes them feel little to me again.

Heading... home at 3am after Jack got some medication for his migraine and started feeling better.  Once I got him settled, I climbed into bed and slept three hours before I had to wake up and get the other kids out the door and off to school.  That day, Jack slept off and on nearly all day, and Logan, checking in on Jack, asked me to please go in their room and double check that Jack "ain't dead". Haha.  He was jus sleeping. Maybe Logan got a little of his mama after all.  The worrying part.

Crossing... things off my to do list to stay busy (and awake) Monday.  I did the dishes and planted more dahlias in some pots.  I also pulled out dinner from the freezer.  Then after I grabbed Carly from school I went to Jazzercise to get my workout on and then came home and made chicken broccoli alfredo.

Loving... the project Carly came home with this week. Her teacher assigned each student a peep (those marshmallow snacks) to take care of. They have to bring them back each day for a health check up, and take care of them 24/7 or get someone else to watch them.  Carly was adorable with hers, making up a bedroom and feeding it dinner with us. She's so cute.

Feeling... awful for Jack whose headache continued on Monday and then on and off throughout the week.

Trying... to take a nap on Tuesday when the twins came home with their twin friends, Anthony & Sully. It was fun to meet them after hearing so much about them, but I was left feeling exhausted.

Jobbing... it up with my twins this week as Logan was umping for little league and Jack was doing car details. It makes me really proud of them.

Walking... outside, around the block, taking in all the signs of spring and the sunshine, with Carly in her rollerblades. It just feels so good to be outside. Our lilacs are about to bloom our front porch swing is getting lots of sitting.

Parenting... my teenagers so hard this week. It's just relentless. If you're out there in the trenches, too, I see you. Please know you're not alone.

Taking... Carly to her well child visit and getting her Starbucks and then back to the clinic for her ADHD intake appointment.  Her well child appointment was great, but I left her ADHD intake feeling defeated. It felt like the psychologist was trying to find any other explanation for her ADHD behaviors (like being gifted is why she is the way she is).  But I know my girl, and I see her behavior, and I feel quite confident that ADHD is the answer.

Going... with Logan to a local gym to help him sign up so that he can workout, which I think is a great place for his attention to be focused.

Enjoying... Carly's last guitar lesson. I am so grateful for Elliot and the patience he showed for Carly, but we decided that right now, we're going to let her focus on gymnastics and she can come back to guitar when she's a little older and more interested in learning.

Heading... to Jazzercise even though I was exhausted and really sore from my fibromyalgia. I took it easy during the workout, but I was still proud of myself for showing up.

Recently... Josh has been making ham and homemade macaroni & cheese for dinner each week and the kids go gaga for it! He crumbles goldfish crackers on top and it is so good! I'm so grateful that we share the cooking responsibilities. Especially since he's so great at it!

Subbing... for Carly's teacher for the afternoon and just loving all those sweet little third graders. Her class is seriously the best. You can tell all those kids really feel like family and it makes me so happy for Carly to have that.

Running... some errands, getting the car washed as well as picking up Logan & Wyatt's new glasses that came in. I am so grateful we found another place in town that takes our insurance to get the kids glasses from because going out of town for all four of them would have been a nightmare.

Getting... a haircut from a professional for the first time in maybe two years? Last time I needed a haircut I just got my hair wet and had Josh cut it straight across the back. hah! But this time, I wanted a dramatic cut from mid-back to chin length.  So I scheduled under Cadence's advice and had the best time getting a haircut while chatting with Mary (my hairstylist) and Cadence's mom Amber, who also works there. I was worried I might regret the haircut since it was so drastic, but I don't have any regrets so far!

Subbing... for half of the day Friday and enjoying the students as well as the sunshine. My soul is so weary of winter and I swear the sun is healing me.

Having... the best Friday afternoon. Logan dropped Carly at gymnastics for me and I met her there. Afterwards we got Wendy's for dinner (yum!) and I watched The Pitt, which is the BEST show I have watched in a long, long time. It's even better than Grey's.

Sleeping... in on Saturday, which was much needed. Then I spent some time journaling on the front porch swing. It's the best way to start the day!  Then Jack had Cadence over and Carly had Joslyn over and Wyatt went to the land with Josh.

Spending... the afternoon blogging.  I am really hoping to get caught up on the blog before summer.

Reading... and finishing The Girl Who Came Home on audio for book club. It was a sweet book about a girl who survived the sinking of the Titanic that started slow but gripped me by the end.

Adoring... Carly. She's just so much fun and such a mini-me. Currently she's writing Dragons Love Tacos 3, and when she's done, her friend group has a plan to write books 4 & 5 as well. She's just the best!
