Around Here: Week 31

{The office/laundry room}

Reading... a new (to me) author, Jenny Han per the recommendation of my high school friend Emily. I just finished The Summer I Turned Pretty, and have started the second in the trilogy.  They are super fun, easy reads with an engrossing story line. When I finish these ones, I want to read "To All The Boys I've Loved Before."

Sharing... the fact that I had "the talk" with the twins just after their ninth birthday. We laughed a little, we were embarrassed, but we got through it and I feel confident that I laid the perfect foundation for future conversations.

Playing... speed with Jack and Logan. Josh taught them how to play and it is so happy to play a game with them that doesn't make me want to stab my eyes out. (Chutes & Ladders... Candyland... Who even invented these things!?!)  They're really good so it's a real challenge to play them and we always have a fun time.

Sorting... through all the clothes for all the children. I absolutely hate sorting through clothes and figuring out what's too small and what's needed.  But I know it must be done, so this week I buckled down and sorted through summer clothes, fall clothes and winter clothes so I could know exactly what the kids need for the upcoming school year.  It feels great now that it's done.

Organizing... the office and the boys' bedroom.  The office has been out of sorts for 2+ weeks now since I painted it, and I finally got it functional. There is still a lot to be done (some sorting and some purging), but I can use the laundry room half of it at least!
In the boys' bedroom we did a sort of crazy thing... We put all three twin beds in a row. Ha!  I was crying (super reasonable) to Josh (super patient) about how having Wyatt's bed in the office made me feel like the whole house was off kilter.  He said, "Let's just throw all three beds in there, and see how we like it."  Shortly after that a friend of ours offered us her bunk bed set, so if all goes well with the three together, we will be keeping them together, but with a bunk bed plus a single bed mid-August. Wahoo!  I took advantage of the move and reorganized all the boys' chapter books, moving a bookshelf into their room and swapping out a toy shelf that wasn't needed.  Another bonus is that Wyatt loves sleeping with the cats, and he can do that in the twins' room.  He's so precious with those kitties of ours!

Crying... as my sister said goodbye to her sweet foster daughter this week after 464 days.  She was ours in every way and will live forever in our hearts.

Smiling... as the kids are reading with their breakfasts.  Like mother, like sons.
Working... with Wyatt on improving his clinginess.  We had a breakthrough last weekend when he attended a birthday party of a close friend sans parents.  But around the house, he is still keeping really close tabs on Josh and myself.

Lamenting... the fact that this is Josh's last weekend of summer.  He starts some supplemental teacher trainings Monday, and that's it-- his summer is a wrap.  It's been super fun, and I'm sad to see it end.  We will squeeze in a bit more fun before the boys start at the end of the month, but for the most part, it will be "mama + 4" for the remaining few weeks.

Praying... for my sweet Grandma Jeannie who, after years of ill health, passed away this week.  I know she's loving being reunited with all her lost loved ones, including her best girlfriend, so I am finding comfort in that.

Spending... time with Josh's sister & her family.  They have three kiddos-- a son the twins' age, a daughter Wyatt's age, and a little one who is a year older than Carly-- so basically it was a loud, crazy blast! The kids had so much fun together, and it was really nice to catch up with his sister and her husband, who starts teaching fourth grade like Josh this fall.  They are deaf (Josh's sister and her husband) so we spent the few days they were here signing, (Sign Language class in high school is where I met Josh 17 years ago-- it's been very useful in my life!) and it was so cute when Carly would pretend to sign with us, waving her hands up and down expressively.  It was really cool for Carly to actually sign things, too because they would know what she wanted.

Focusing... on conscious eating, working really hard at not eating to numb my emotions, which has been a challenge this week.

Letting go... of some baby things of Carly's.  Her crib mobile (that was also Logan & Jack's, and Wyatt's) as well as the bath seat that we used for all four kids, and the boppy I used to nurse them all.  I am also selling the cloth diapers (BumGenius) I used for her and Wyatt (if anyone is interested in a cloth diaper starter kit, I'm your girl!) and some receiving blankets.  It's hard to let go, but with four kids, if I don't let things go as I am done using them, our house is gonna fill up fast!!!  The surprising thing about getting rid of some of the baby things is that I am completely at peace with it. Being home with all four kids this summer has shown me that four kids is plenty.  I am overwhelmed some days and imagining five seems impossible.  I feel like it's a huge blessing, this acceptance.  I'm grateful for it.

Contemplating... the blog's future.  Read all about that here.

Enduring... horrible smoke & unsafe air advisories because of wind bringing the Canadian fire smoke down to us in central Washington. It ruined our afternoon pool plans and has us all stuck inside this Friday afternoon.  I'm hoping it passes quickly!
Meanwhile, I am taking advantage of the long day at home to catch up on laundry and other chores around the house.  Right now I'm going to sweep the kitchen, then sort through children's books and send those we no longer need to Josh's classroom!

Around Here: Week 27

Celebrating... the fourth of July with extended family over the weekend.  We went to Grand Coulee Dam & saw the laser light show plus firework display.  It was an awesome way to spend the day.  We were so happy to have Uncle Samuel, Aunt Tiffanie, Nanny, Papa, Aunt Roxanne and Cousins Isaiah, Ferris, Milo & Annie with us.

Working... outside in the mornings doing our summer school work on the picnic table in the backyard. It makes me so happy to be out there with the birds everyday before it gets hot.

Reaping... what we've sown in the garden and flowerbeds.  It feels so good to be getting some payout for the constant work that (mostly Josh) has been putting in to the yard. There are peas that everyone is eating right off the vine; there are roses (both red and, my favorite, pink) as well as lillies & marigolds.  And our grass is absolutely gorgeous & so lush!

Enjoying... the beautiful pink roses our front yard produced that Josh cut & brought in the house for me. He's been bringing in red roses, too, for my bedside table and it makes me so happy!!!

Finding... $200 cash on the ground at Safeway (a local grocery store) Thursday.  I picked it up and immediately turned it in, thinking of the poor person who was later going to discover they lost two $100 dollar bills.  Jack was with me (everyone else was at home) and he asked why I didn't just keep it. It made me grateful that I did the right thing, and I explained to him that it wasn't mine, and I would feel awful if I lost money and someone took it instead of turning it in.

Thankful... my migraines seem to have taken a hike!  That was a terrible, terrible way to spend the last two weeks of June.  I am being careful to get enough sleep and stay relaxed, though, just in case they try to reappear.

Roasting... in these central Washington temps!!! It's been over 100 every day this week.  Whew!  Thank goodness for our pool pass!  Josh and I were talking yesterday about how we feel like we've acclimated pretty well to the constant sunshine, lack of humidity & high temperatures, which is awesome. It just feels like the perfect summer.  (Except when I burn my legs on our leather car seats. Ha!)

Finishing... The Stars are Fire by Anita Shreve.  Oh, I just devoured this book.  I adore Shreve's writing, her characters, the settings and the real life events she draws inspiration from.  This book was no different.

Reading... The Island (again) by Elin Hilderbrand and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to the twins.

Starting... The Hate U Give on Audiobook from Overdrive (yay for free library books!) and The Blue Bistro (an oldie from Elin Hilderbrand that I've not read yet!) that my sister loaned me.

Planning... to reread a few other summer favorites-- Fortune's Rocks and Sea Glass by Anita Shreve, and Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand.  It makes me happy to imagine revisiting these fantastic books.

Watching... Me Before You and remembering that the book is much (much!) better than the movie.

Dealing with... more random fevers from Carly. I'm trying not to worry too much, but I don't know what they are from. Teething maybe? She has been a bit more drooly than usual.

Planning... for a successful week next week some meal planning, some goal setting & some to-do-list accomplishing. I hate it while I'm doing it, but I'm always so glad when it's done!

Around Here: Week 24

{Wyatt's embarrassed/proud face}

Watching... Wyatt's class performance on Octopus at school.  He did so great, sang so loud and smiled so big.  Josh surprised both of us and took a half day so he could attend.  It meant so much to both me & Wyatt.  Wyatt told me it took him "100 hours" to cut out his octopus.  Hah!

Finishing... Confessions of a Domestic Failure and Dreamland Burning.  This puts me at 34 books for this year!  I loved both books and recommend them highly.  Dreamland Burning had me turning pages faster than I have in a long time, and Confessions of a Domestic Failure was both hilarious and validating talking about how hard it is to be a stay-at-home-mom.

Reading... Everything, Everything and when I'm done with that (probably this afternoon) I will be starting The Identicals by Elin Hildebrand and The Color Purple, which are all on my summer reading list from The Inspired Reading Book Club. (If you love reading, click over to our Facebook page and ask to be added.  One of us will approve you and you'll be on your way to a summer of reading awesomeness!  We'd love to have you.)

Swirling... in the chaos of what was our last week of school.  There has been activity after activity, and full backpacks coming home everyday this week.  Last night, around 11:30 I realized I hadn't posted anything about Wyatt's birthday on social media.  Josh accidentally drove to work with both sets of keys in his pockets, so I had to walk to school to take Wyatt's class his birthday cupcakes.  Which wouldn't have been a problem, except it was raining. Ha! Go figure!
We made it to the school, just a touch damp, and got to celebrate our little guy.  Then it was laundry and dinner, opening presents and doing dishes, showers, baths and and bedtime, and before I knew it, the day was nearly over.  I am happy to be taking a big breath today, knowing we will have a nice long break from our routine.

Celebrating... Wyatt's sixth birthday yesterday with homemade cake and a yummy meal-- drumsticks on the BBQ as well as corn on the cob.  He was so happy to open presents and share some cake with his brothers.  I was happy to celebrate our sweet little boy.

Crying... as I reminisced and wrote a birthday post about Wyatt this morning.  (Sometimes thinking back on hard times in my life, especially the miscarriages, can really get me!)

Embracing... the good and the bad of motherhood.  This week felt like one big dichotomy.  It was equal parts yelling & hugging; forgiving & laughing.  The boys are stretching their independence, which is mostly good, but can also mean trying things out (like sass-mouthing, or not doing their jobs) and that makes my job exhausting. I also think we were all a bit tense knowing this was the last week of school.  As much as I know we will enjoy summer, we also like knowing what's happening everyday, and we can all struggle a bit with change, so there was definitely some tension among us.  But there were also many, many tender moments sprinkled in, that allowed me to carry on despite the challenges.  Like overhearing Logan tell his classmate that his mom made "the best spice cake ever" for his birthday; or Wyatt telling me I was the best mom ever; or Carly giving me kisses and hugs out of nowhere as she plays.
Nearly a decade into my parenting gig, and I'm so grateful for the perspective I've earned.  I know that "this too shall pass" applies not only to the hard parts, but to the good parts as well, and it reminds me not to take any of this journey lightly or for granted.

Closing out... the 2016-2017 school year.  Today was the last day of school!!!  For summer we're looking forward to lots of reading, swimming and family time, as Josh has summer off as well.

Grateful... for the amazing year my boys had in public school.  We have been so, so blessed by the teachers and staff at our school, and I am so pleased with the decision we made to send them.

Prepping for... a huge birthday party tomorrow.  All three boys got to invite five friends to the party, and we'll have a house FULL to the brim of little boys.  They can't wait!!!
